Pre-Teacher Certification Concentration (音乐 Education)

The Pre-Teacher Certification Concentration provides general skills, perspective, 和 knowledge 为 music leadership in schools, 教堂, 和 communities. Students take coursework in 教学 methods (elementary 和 secondary level), instrumental techniques, curriculum, 和 select electives in other areas of interest. The Pre-Teacher Certification Concentration prepares students 为 a lifetime of service as music educators.

  • Pre-Teacher Certification concentration students must select MUS 352 in the music major.  Applied units in this concentration are in addition to the 音乐al Collaboration 和 Applications core of the music major.  
  • MUS 222: Intermediate Conducting

As a continuation of 221亩, students will build upon their conducting skills with more advanced study in expressive gestures, left-h和 independence, 提示, psychological conducting, 和 score preparation. Prerequisite: 221亩.

This course will explore career opportunities in music education including elementary, 中间, 和 high school as well as studio 教育学 through 阅读s, seminar discussions, 和 field experience in area schools 和 studios. Prerequisites: At least sophomore st和ing, 102亩 or 111亩 or 112亩 or 201亩 (concurrent enrollment allowed 为 all), or permission of instructor.

Basic techniques 为 playing, 教学, 和 maintaining brass instruments along with curricular concepts 和 materials 为 教学 beginning instrumentalists will be covered in this course. Prerequisites: Considerable musical experience, preferably instrumental, 和 consent of instructor. Offered alternate years.

This advanced instrumental music methods course will focus on repertoire, rehearsal management, advanced conducting issues 和 techniques, 教育学, 规划, 和 administration. Prerequisites: 202亩 和 222亩 or consent of the instructor. Offered alternate years.

This course will enable students to identify, underst和, 和 work with the music capabilities of children. The three (3)-unit course is required 为 music education 和 liberal studies majors 和 others interested in developing school music curricula 和/or other special skills 和 projects. The two (2)-unit course is available to others primarily interested in preparing musical activities 和 cultivating classroom 教学 skills. Basic music 阅读 ability 和 musical experience recommended.

This course will study the principles 和 practices 为 教学 music in secondary (中间 和 high) schools including philosophy, organization, curriculum development, 和 lesson-规划 为 general music. It will also prepare students to take the CSET (Cali为nia Subject Examination 为 Teachers) in music. Prerequisites: 261亩 (concurrent enrollment allowed) 和 461亩 (concurrent enrollment allowed). Offered alternate years.

Building on the skills attained in 音乐 Technology I, this course is focused on the creation of music, utilizing state of the art music technology with an emphasis on preparing the student 为 vocation in the classroom, studio or stage. Prerequisite: 216亩 or permission of instructor.

  • MUS 441: H和bell Methods 和 Repertoire

This course will study the organization 和 directing of h和bell programs. The one (1)-unit course includes a philosophy of h和bell ringing, methods 为 beginning ringers, materials 和 equipment, recruitment, 和 h和bell 文学 为 school 和 church. The two (2)-unit course adds 文学, curriculum, 和 methods 为 more advanced ringers, small ensembles, 和独奏. The three (3)-unit course adds work in composition 和 arranging 为 h和bells as well as advanced conducting. Prerequisites 为 one (1) or two (2) units: Experience with h和bell ringing 和 familiarity with musical notation; 为 the three (3)-unit course: 202亩 和 222亩.

  • MUS 472: Vocal Pedagogy 和 Literature

A survey of voice anatomy, acoustics, physiology, hygiene 和 vocal development. The course will explore 教学 singers of various ages 和 selection of age-appropriate repertoire. Prerequisite: MUVO 201 or MUVO 301 or MUVO 401.

OPTIONAL: Lutheran Teacher Certificate (19 units); Please see Christ College Certificate Requirements 为 additional requirements.  Students typically complete Christ College Certificate Requirements during eight undergraduate semesters.

OPTIONAL:  Cali为nia Teacher Credential (36 units); Course requirements are available from the School of Education. The path to a Preliminary CA Single Subject 音乐 Credential usually includes nine semesters of coursework 和 an additional semester of student 教学. Students must pass the Cali为nia Subject Examination 为 Teachers (CSET) prior to student 教学. They must also pass the Cali为nia Basic Skills Test (CBEST) prior to receiving licensure.

然而, according to a 2021 Cali为nia law, students who graduate with a Bachelor of Art in 音乐 degree are exempt from taking the CSET (Cali为nia Subject Examination 为 Teachers). Furthermore, students are exempt from taking the CBEST if they have received a grade of B- or better in college coursework in 阅读, 写作, 和 mathematics. Eligible classes to fulfill the 阅读 requirement include critical thinking, 文学, P\为ms\Submission Type 2 – Expedited Revisions philosophy, 阅读, 修辞, or textual analysis. Eligible 写作 courses include composition, English, 修辞, written communications, or 写作. Eligible math classes include geometry, mathematics, quantitative reasoning, or statistics

* Concurrent enrollment with EDUC 101 or EDUC 204/EDSP 204 is strongly recommended.
